With a recent increase in phone scams involving cryptocurrency, Riverside issued a warning yesterday. Victims are tricked into transferring their funds into digital assets to be sent to the scammers. Although cryptocurrencies have become more common in modern economics, they pose a significant risk due to scams like these, as per Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
This warning comes after numerous incidents where victims were convinced to send large amounts of cryptocurrency. In most cases, they believed they were making smart investments in new digital assets, not knowing that recovery of funds transferred internationally is challenging for investigators to trace.
International fraudsters have been employing similar methods for years, capitalizing on the promise of high returns and the mysterious nature of cryptocurrencies. Phone scams involving digital assets have been reported from different parts of the world.
Scammers are emboldened by the rise of digital assets, their potential profitability, and utilize this to exploit those with insufficient knowledge to differentiate between legitimate and fraudulent opportunities.
