The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department notifies residents of Loma Linda, California, about an upcoming traffic safety operation. It is scheduled for Friday, October 15, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. The initiative, led by Sergeant Mark Addy, is directed towards ensuring and promoting the safety of both cyclists and pedestrians, as reported by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. It is crucial to protect the rights and lives of these road users as cities and counties continue to expand and accommodate various transportation means.
The primary objective of this operation is to curb risky driving behaviors that could jeopardize pedestrians and cyclists' safety. These include speeding, unlawful turns, not yielding to pedestrians or cyclists, and ignoring traffic signs and signals. In a shared call to duty, Sergeant Mark Addy implores everyone to exercise caution while commuting as per his statement on the press release:
"We all have destinations to reach, and not everyone travels by car. Bicyclists and pedestrians have equal road rights but have lesser protective measures. We must all show consideration for one another."
Caution is not only to be practiced by drivers. Pedestrians and cyclists also need to employ measures that will further promote their safety. Such measures include using crosswalks, remaining visible to drivers, making careful crossings, and not abruptly entering vehicle paths as per SBSD.
Cyclists are, as well, directed to observe traffic laws, hand-signal their intentions, use bicycle lights during nighttime, respect parking zones, and yield to pedestrians according to the regulations released by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. Additionally, drivers are reminded to adhere to speed limits, honor pedestrian right-of-way at crosswalks, be cautious at intersections, and avoid blocking crosswalks and driving while impaired.
To fund this crucial traffic safety operation, a grant has been awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as mentioned on the press release. Both entities, in collaboration with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, recognize the importance of assuring the safety of all road users who are entitled to secure and convenient mobility.
