The Simi Valley Police Department is the recipient of a $103,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), with the aim of improving road safety and minimizing traffic-related incidents. The grant, targeting key traffic issues such as distracted driving, impaired driving, and speeding, will be used to strengthen existing enforcement and education programs, according to the news release.
Commander Ritchie Lew thanked the OTS, noting that the grant bolstered the police department's dedication to safety by permitting increased measures in enhancing road safety. The funding enables the initiation of new programs such as DUI checkpoints, enforcement operations against distracted driving, and more emphasis on activities that place cyclists and pedestrians at risk. The grant also supports inter-agency partnerships, traffic safety presentations, and officer training in areas such as Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE), and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).
To increase focus on violation types commonly resulting in accidents such as speeding, right of way violations, ignoring stop signs or red lights, as well as incorrect turning or lane changes, targeted enforcement operations will be implemented. This strategy aims to diminish accident likelihood, benefiting both motorists and pedestrians. Community lessons, too, will be provided for local inhabitants to learn about crucial traffic safety matters, thus fostering a safer environment for all.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is the channel through which this grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety has been made available. It is part of a nationwide effort towards improving traffic safety. Rewarded programs run until September 2024, offering adequate time for execution and evaluation of the efficiency of these measures in the Simi Valley community.
