El Segundo citizens and regular commuters face a temporary inconvenience due to critical repair works on the Union Pacific Railroad crossing at Douglas Street. As per the announcement from the City Manager's Office, starting today, the northbound and southbound lanes of Douglas Street at the railroad crossing will be closed for addressing a sinkhole issue.
The sinkhole has resulted from a compromised storm sewer line, necessitating this urgent repair work by Union Pacific Railroad. Provided the weather conditions aren't unfavorable, the anticipated repair duration is a week. This closure, though temporary, is going to impact normal life in El Segundo and the patience and understanding of citizens and visitors are much appreciated.
It brings to recall a similar issue not very long ago at the same Union Pacific Railroad crossing on Douglas Street, according to the City Manager's Office. However, the issue on that occasion was due to a glitch in the railroad crossing arm rather than a sinkhole. Incidents like these underline the importance of a robustly maintained infrastructure which enhances efficient transportation.
Meanwhile, temporary street signs and barricades are being placed to guide the diverted traffic via Aviation Boulevard.
Any questions or concerns related to the repair work, street closures, or detours can be asked directly to the City's mainline at 310-524-2300. The city asks for citizens' cooperation and understanding in this situation, pledging to reopen the northbound and southbound lanes on Douglas Street immediately post completion of the repair works.
