In the move towards sustainable transportation, e-bikes are growing in popularity. However, this rise has also led to an increase in e-bike thefts. Recent events at Sierra Vista Middle School in Irvine, California, highlight this risk. On Saturday, October 14, the Irvine Police Department reportedly arrested two individuals accused of e-bike theft, with the assistance of the Tustin Police Department in recovering the stolen e-bikes.
The suspects, Valente Hernandez of Tustin and quickly Roger Ernesto Custodio of Huntington Beach, were arrested for grand theft after attempting to ride away on the stolen e-bikes. Tracking technology was instrumental in this case as one of the e-bikes was fitted with a tracking tag. This allowed law enforcement to trace the stolen item to its location in Tustin.
The Irvine Police Department endorses the use of sturdy locks, such as U-locks, plus registering bikes with Project 529, a global bike registry and recovery service, to safeguard against e-bike theft. Coupling these preventive actions with the cooperative policing between law enforcement agencies provides an effective response to the surge in e-bike thefts and ensures a higher level of community safety.
