Following Waymo's move into SoCal, critics have questioned the safety of the technology. While Waymo maintains that its service provides a safer alternative to traditional human-operated vehicles, user opinion remains varied, with anecdotal reports of minor mishaps and inconveniences NBC Los Angeles reports.
A string of incidents in San Francisco, including traffic congestion and collisions involving Waymo's autonomous vehicles, have amplified these safety concerns. A total of 659 accident reports involving autonomous vehicles have, to date, been lodged with the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
Despite concerns, Waymo's move into the Santa Monica market signifies the company's ongoing commitment to its expansion plans in Southern California and further afield. With each upgrade, autonomous vehicles are edging closer to becoming a core part of urban transportation infrastructure, necessitating rigorous checks to ensure their seamless and safe incorporation.
