Located off Los Angeles, Catalina Island is known for its stunning coastline and abundant marine life. Yet the island made headlines yesterday, when business owners Jack Arthur Tucey and Yueh Mei Tucey were charged with wage theft and fraud. The couple allegedly defrauded their employees of more than $500,000 in unpaid overtime wages, starting in 2008, while also submitting fraudulent statements to the Employment Development Department (EDD), according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office news release.
These charges underscore an ongoing concern for workers' rights, highlighted by wage disparity issues. District Attorney George Gascón underscored that by allegedly underreporting wages and disenfranchising employees of their owed overtime pay, the defendants are contributing to the cycle of economic hardship facing many workers. If found guilty, the Tuceys could both be looking at up to 22 years in prison.
Victims of the Tuceys, or anyone with relevant information, are urged to reach out to the Department of Industrial Relations via their hotline at 818-901-5305.
