Yesterday, Jerry Nehl Boylan, captain of the P/V Conception, a Santa Barbara-based dive boat, was convicted of "seaman's manslaughter" for his role in a 2019 fire that culminated in the sinking of the boat and death of 34 people. This incident has spurred a discussion regarding the obligations of individuals responsible for passenger safety, according to The U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California press release.
The catastrophe occurred on September 2, 2019, on Labor Day weekend, while the dive boat was moored in Platt's Harbor near Santa Cruz Island. The fire trapped 33 passengers and one crew member below deck, leading to their demise. Subsequent investigations revealed that Captain Boylan's lack of diligence and care were the probable cause of the tragic incident.
Following the tragedy, Coast Guard Investigative Service Director Jeremy Gauthier said, "This verdict stands as a testament to our commitment to seek justice, hold accountable those responsible, and honor the memory of those lost."
