Dallas is considering renaming a portion of Jim Miller Road to honor Santos Rodriguez, a 12-year-old tragically killed by city police in 1973 as per The Dallas Morning News.
Officer Darrell Cain fatally shot Rodriguez, who had been wrongfully apprehended along with his brother during a robbery investigation. His death came about from a Russian roulette-style interrogation. Subsequent to the tragedy, it was revealed that Rodriguez's fingerprints didn't match those found at the crime scene.
Formal apologies for his death have been issued by then-Mayor Mike Rawlings in 2013 and current Police Chief Eddie Garcia in 2021 as mentioned by the Dallas Observer. Salutes to his memory include a statue in Pike Park and the park's recreation center named after him as reported by The Dallas Morning News. His 50th death anniversary this year was commemorated with community activities and documentary showings as detailed by KERA News.
Council member Jaime Resendez led the proposal to rename Jim Miller Road, and it is supported by both council member Adam Bazaldua and mayor pro tem Tennell Atkins. The name change would bring further awareness to Santos Rodriguez's story.
Bessie Rodriguez, Santos's mother, stated her wish for a street to be named after her son, which got Resendez considering the proposal. Community responses have varied, with Hadi Jawad, director of the Dallas Peace and Justice Center, believing it is a necessary step for future awareness according to The Dallas Morning News.
There have been concerns raised about the fiscal consequences of the name change and the choice of locale being in Southeast Dallas. Resendez acknowledged these concerns but insists that the honor is overdue and asked, "why not Southeast Dallas?" in response to the locale question per The Dallas Morning News.
