A recent study by LendingTree's ValuePenguin ranked Dallas amongst the deadliest cities for pedestrians in Texas. Similarly, the statistics align with research from another recent NBC 5 investigation, which found Dallas to have the highest rate of traffic deadliness among the ten most populous U.S. cities, with Phoenix, Arizona following closely behind.
The Full List:

Specifically focusing on pedestrian deaths, researchers analyzed National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data from 2016 to 2020. They found that Dallas contained five of the 25 deadliest roadways, spotlighting the necessity to improve safety within the city's infrastructure quickly.
In spite of significant attention being dedicated towards pedestrian safety within the city, a large number of fatalities occur on interstates and highways too. The study mentioned above revealed 23.6% of fatalities occurred on interstates and 14% on highways. This highlights the significantly increased risks pedestrians face due to rapidly moving traffic and the lack of defined pedestrian pathways.
As much as infrastructure plays a role, drivers need to always on the lookout and mindful of pedestrians on the roads. Divya Sangameshwar of ValuePenguin, an auto insurance expert, stated, "Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users, and drivers need to be watchful for them and do their part to keep them safe." Consequently, the solution isn't solely in the roads; human behavior is an essential factor in preventing these accidents.
Pedestrian should always remember to cross streets only at designated intersections or crosswalks and to look both ways before crossing, even if the roads appear vacant. Despite the importance of adhering to safe practices as a pedestrian, responsibility doesn't lie solely with them. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), pedestrian traffic fatalities have increased by 29.6% over the last five years.
The Dallas Express reported that in October 2022, TxDOT noted a month of particularly high danger for pedestrians in Texas. There were 5,764 traffic crashes involving pedestrians, which led to 829 deaths and 1,526 serious injuries. This disturbing data underscores the urgency of addressing the rising issue of pedestrian fatalities. The responsibility for the reduction of these deaths is shared by pedestrians, drivers, local governments, and urban planners who need draft to a comprehensive plan.
Flower Mound and Frisco serve as great examples for Dallas. They're cities that have not experience any pedestrian fatalities and provide a model of what safety measures Dallas can adopt. To ensure lasting change, we need to analyze and mimic their effective measures, creating communities that are secure for pedestrians.
Though the issue may seem daunting, it can be solved with a calculated and dedicated approach. Driver mindfulness, pedestrian caution, and improvements in the city's infrastructure have the potential to drastically reduce pedestrian deaths in Dallas. As NBC 5 reported, since 2019, more than 1,000 individuals have perished in traffic incidents in Dallas alone. All stakeholders must unite and exert concerted efforts to address this multi-faceted issue, making Dallas a safer home for all its inhabitants.
