The Big D has finally dusted off the remnants of "Shingle Mountain" and is breathing a hefty sigh of relief. The southern metropolis has declared a victory over the toxic mound that formerly blighted the skyline, completing the remediation of a former recycling site turned environmental nuisance per the City of Dallas.
The city, which took control of the unsightly expanse back in 2021, had to coordinate a large-scale soil exodus—a staggering 40,000 cubic yards of it—after it came to light that lead levels were playing a dangerous game, skyrocketing past regulatory comfort zones.
The cleanup effort started with determination on August 28, 2023, and officials had rolled up their sleeves and prepared for a long haul. But lo and behold, the project wrapped up on October 18, sailing past the finish line a full two weeks ahead of schedule and setting a precedent for efficiency according to the City of Dallas.
