On Thursday, a pedestrian was fatally struck by two separate hit-and-run drivers in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is currently investigating the incident according to their news release. This incident forms part of a worrying trend in pedestrian fatalities, highlighting the need to implement and enforce stronger traffic regulations.
The fatally struck pedestrian was initially hit around 9:35 p.m. by a vehicle moving southbound on Normandie Avenue. Without providing identification or assistance, the driver fled. While the victim was still lying on the road from the first collision, a second vehicle hit him only two minutes later. This driver also fled without rendering any aid. Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim remains undisclosed, as the relatives have yet to be notified.
The City Council, to help catch the culprits, has offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information that aids in identifying or capturing the drivers involved. Their news release outlines this offer in detail. The LAPD's South Traffic Division and LA Regional Crime Stoppers welcome any leads from the community in this case.
Unfortunately, there has been an apparent increase in pedestrian fatalities in recent years. This case, among others, draws attention to meaningful pedestrian safety measures. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that pedestrian fatalities went up by 5% in 2020, regardless of the pandemic causing a decrease in traffic. This upward trend underscores the endangerment of pedestrians due to inadequate infrastructure and a lack of adequate traffic regulation enforcement.
Many cities across the U.S. have started adopting measures, including Vision Zero, an international road traffic safety project that strives for a highway system devoid of fatalities or serious injuries in road traffic. Traffic-calming strategies, improved crosswalks, and pedestrian refuge islands are also among the other measures under consideration. Initiatives such as these are essential, not only to prevent tragic incidents like the recent Los Angeles case but also to prioritize pedestrian safety in urban planning and law enforcement.
