In the wee hours of the morning in north Houston, a patrol officer found his unit struck while nobly assisting a stalled vehicle. The officer was not seriously harmed, fortunately, but the collision served as a chilling reminder of the ever-present hazard these public servants face. According to Click2Houston, the officer stopped to aid a truck on the feeder road near E. Burress Street when another driver rear-ended his unit around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. The investigation into whether alcohol was a contributing factor is pending, and the driver who caused the crash also sustained injuries.
In an unrelated yet equally distressing episode later the same day, another HPD hero was met with vehicular adversity. A unit, while answering the siren call of duty on Thanksgiving night, was unexpectedly hit at an intersection in the southwest corner of the city. "The officer's vehicle was responding to a call and had lights on before checking the intersection heading northbound," HPD delineated, revealing that a sudden impact occurred as it breached into the intersection. This incident, documented by ABC13, unfolded around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 23, in the 7500 block of the Southwest Freeway near Beechnut. Bystanders observed as the aftermath prompted drivers to navigate an ad-hoc detour around the collision site, with some steering their vehicles right at a local Shell station.
The officer involved in the evening's accident complained of leg pain but didn't need to go to the hospital. On the other hand, the other driver with chest pains was taken to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. The question of fault in the crash will be addressed another day.
