Gov. Pritzker's Think Big America Injects $1.5M into Abortion Rights Battles in Virginia, Ohio, and NevadaSource: Twitter / Governor JB Pritzker

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker recently established the nonprofit organization, Think Big America, to safeguard and broaden abortion rights. The group has donated $1.5 million to support reproductive rights in Virginia, Ohio, and Nevada where legislation related to these crucial issues is currently under the spotlight. The Chicago Sun-Times has provided more in-depth coverage on this matter available here.

Virginia's upcoming state election on November 7 could impact its existing abortion laws significantly. Current Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin vowed to endorse an abortion ban after 15 weeks if the Republicans gain complete control of the state's legislature. In response, Think Big America has donated to four Democratic Senate candidates and to the state's Democratic party, contributing $25,000 and $150,000 respectively according to The Messenger.

Think Big America spokesperson, Christina Amestoy, emphasizes the organization's dedication in combating extremism at every level enlarging on the delicate situation of abortion rights in Virginia. She issues a warning about the dangers posed by radical anti-choice campaigners and their far-right supporters, who yearn to drastically reduce reproductive freedoms within the remaining Southern state where such rights still exist.

Pritzker, a longtime advocate for reproductive rights, collaborated with Illinois's Democratic-led General Assembly to broaden access to abortion services in the state. After Roe v. Wade got overturned last year, Pritzker further committed himself to the cause by founding Think Big America, a tax-exempt nonprofit devoted to protecting and enhancing abortion rights throughout the U.S.

Think Big America has also donated to abortion rights campaigns in Nevada and Ohio, contributing $1 million to the Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom PAC and $250,000 to Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights. The Nevada PAC, affiliated with Planned Parenthood, strives towards including a 'fundamental right to reproductive rights' in the November 2024 ballot question. In Ohio, the fight to protect abortion rights manifests in a forthcoming vote on November 7, wondering whether to preserve reproductive freedom in the state's constitution. Reproductive rights advocates have already defeated an August ballot initiative that proposed to increase the threshold for constitutional changes from a simple majority to 60%, a change that could put the future of abortion rights in Ohio in jeopardy.

Pritzker personally supported these causes with sizable financial contributions. His individual donations total $750,000, divided among Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights and Ohioans for Reproductive Freedom. Pritzker also financially backed the abortion amendment in Kansas, funded the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, and contributed directly to Janet Protasiewicz, recently elected to the Wisconsin Supreme Court thereby giving liberals a 4-3 majority on the bench.

The influence of Think Big America is not limited to monetary contributions. Some of Pritzker's political staff are splitting their time between his campaign and the nonprofit. This year, several staff members, including Pritzker's campaign manager, assisted Democrats in Ohio in defeating the August ballot initiative. According to Amestoy, it isn't planned currently for staffers to be in Ohio for the final stage of the approaching vote, but Think Big America plans to post social media links for supporters to sign up to make phone calls.
