Shoppers at the Northridge Fashion Center got more than they bargained for on Black Friday when gunfire shattered the usual festive hustle and pre-holiday buzz. According to KABC, LAPD officers rushed to the scene after reports of shots fired at 5:49 p.m. During the evening shopping spree, a shattering sound marked the altercation at H2O Sushi & Izakaya restaurant with a large plate glass window broken.
Amidst bargain hunters and holiday revelers, a dispute among several juveniles escalated into a dangerous confrontation, police say. The LAPD Facebook page confirmed that no one was struck by gunfire in what could have been a harrowing calamity. The incident sparked a meticulous investigation by the Devonshire Division officers of the LAPD, combing through the scene that paralyzed a corner of the bustling mall with crime-scene tape.
While the investigation unfolded, the chaos did not lead to an evacuation of the mall, which remained flooded with customers cashing in on Black Friday deals. "LAPD officers have been, and will continue to be deployed at this mall and many other shopping centers throughout the City of Los Angeles during this busy holiday shopping season," as stated by the department, in an effort to reassure the public.
Authorities detained four to five juveniles in connection with the incident, as noted by KABC, all of whom were later released. In the shopping frenzy that gripped the center, a car's trunk was also discovered to have been struck by a stray bullet in an eerie testament to the shooting's random nature. Despite the dangerous encounter, the officials made no arrests.
