Hikers in the California desert near San Bernardino stumbled upon a grim scene this week when they discovered human skeletal remains. Authorities were summoned to the barren area near Institution Road and Verdemont Ranch Road around 9:20 a.m. on Wednesday, where they confirmed the human nature of the bones. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division is now tasked with solving this morbid puzzle.
Under Sheriff-Coroner Shannon D. Dicus's direction, the remains have been transported to the Coroner's Office to begin identification procedures. "Further investigation is needed to determine the identity of the victim, and a manner and cause of death," officials stated in a release provided by the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department.
