The City of Irvine addressed concerns about the Tustin Hangar Fire's impact on the environment yesterday through a community update. The city responded rapidly to the Tustin Hangar Fire by instantly creating a call center and a debris reporting portal. These actions are aimed at boosting efficiency, meeting the needs of the affected community, and maintaining open lines of communication with the County of Orange, the Orange County Health Care Agency, the Orange County Fire Authority, and the South Coast Air Quality Management District to manage the situation strategically as per article of City of Irvine.
The update from the city clarifies that, to date, no health risks or impacts have been recognized in Irvine. While there has been no declaration of a public health emergency, additionally, the OCHCA has not cancelled or encouraged to cancel any outdoor activities or sports events. Such precautions, as per the update, are recommended only at locations with visible ash or fire particulates from the Tustin Hangar Fire.
Given the distinct location and topography of Irvine, the insights from the update become particularly important. The recent strong Santa Ana winds, blowing southwest, have pushed potential fire residue away from Irvine, thus reducing the direct impact. As such, there has been no observation of debris or ash in the city's sports fields and park facilities.
