In early November, law enforcement responded to a call from a private security partner, which led to the arrest of Hector Jesus Guerena, 28, from Santa Ana. Guerena had five outstanding warrants for previous offenses and was also under suspicion for theft, the day before.
Guerena's incident also brings into focus a wider issue impacting Irvine, where over 560 bikes were stolen last year. While private security and law enforcement partnerships are essential, individual precautionary measures remain key. The Irvine Police Department encourages bike owners to take steps such as registering bikes online, using robust U-style locks, and considering hiding a tracking device on their bikes.
