Earlier today, two LAPD officers from the Newton Division incurred injuries in a crash on the 57 Freeway in Fullerton. The collision followed a chase ending on Atlantic Avenue in Lynwood and involved a suspected DUI driver.
According to a report by ABC7, the officers were in pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle. They believed the suspect had discarded an object from the vehicle. This led them to retrace the chase route to find the discarded item, during which they got "violently struck" by a driver under influence.
Both officers are likely to recover fully after their treatment at the UCI Medical Center. The DUI suspect, with moderate injuries, was also taken to the hospital. The collision led to the closure of all northbound lanes, but one lane was reopened at 5:45 a.m. The LAPD Headquarters Post on Facebook echoed the hazards posed to officers by DUI drivers, labeling this event as "another reminder of the dangers of DUI."
