The Long Beach Health Department has received a $150,000 grant from the National Association of County and City Officials (NACCHO) to address disparities in COVID-19 and influenza vaccine coverage among racial and ethnic minority adults. This funding will support the Partnering for Vaccine Equity (PAVE) project. As outlined in a recent press release, the PAVE project aims to increase vaccination rates and promote health equity through partnerships with community-based organizations and by identifying concerns and barriers residents have toward vaccination.

The PAVE project supports national efforts to extend vaccine education and outreach. To ensure equitable vaccine distribution, targeted strategies are necessary, as discussed in a study published earlier this year in JAMA

To identify specific challenges faced by residents, the Health Department is currently conducting focus groups and an anonymous online Community Assessment Questionnaire, available to fill out in four different languages. This survey, which will be open until November 6, will inform the department how to address hesitancies and improve access to vaccines.

The Long Beach Health Department aims to bolster immunization services for adults in the coming year by working with community-based organizations to develop targeted initiatives. These initiatives will focus on timely and accurate vaccine administration and improved communication of vaccine recommendations. The department also plans to provide mobile vaccination services and develop stronger vaccine-related communications to connect with hard-to-reach communities.

As stated in the press release, plans to form an immunization coalition involving city healthcare providers also exist. This united approach could increase support and foster accountability in addressing the disparities.

For additional information on the Community Assessment Questionnaire, residents should visit the Long Beach Health Department's official website and stay updated through their social media platforms.
