Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn has invited 1.4 million residents to help rename the "West Santa Ana Branch" rail line. The online public vote launched earlier today. The new name aims to not only reflect the diverse elements of Southeast Los Angeles County but also foster a sense of connection and unity amongst the communities it serves as per West Santa Ana Branch.
The West Santa Ana Branch name, despite being historically significant, is viewed by many as confusing. In order to make a difference, this rail line needs to be widely recognized by residents from Artesia to Huntington Park. Thereby, the decision was made for the public to suggest names for the project under the campaign called 'Name That Train', which subsequently attracted over 1,200 potential names.
This ongoing rebranding and collaboration initiative reflects the community's strong aspirations for improved mobility and better access to opportunities. It addresses the long-standing requirement for reliable transportation, rooted in an understanding of their region. The initiative signifies the transformative potential of public projects when they are truly aligned with the needs of the community they intend to serve.
A panel of judges has narrowed down the 1,200 submitted entries to 12 finalists. Each carries with it the essence of the region's rich history, local aspirations, and collective hopes for a more connected future. Names such as Calafia, named after the mythical queen for which California is named, and Tongva, a tribute to the region's original inhabitants, reflect the community's deep cultural and historical roots.
As Los Angeles County braces for future population growth and demand for sustainable transit options grows, the timely renaming of the rail line stands rightly placed. This ensures public comprehension of the project and allows residents to feel more connected to this vital transport artery linking numerous Southeast Los Angeles County cities. As Whittier Mayor Pro Tem Fernando Dutra insightfully commented, "I'm excited to finally have a replacement name for the West Santa Ana Branch that adequately represents and connects with the communities it will serve."
The public vote closing on December 15 is a significant moment for communities that have long demanded a symbol of their collective aspirations and future potential. The name with the most votes embodies months of public engagement and deliberation and initiates a new chapter for Southeast Los Angeles County, characterized by resilience, reinvention, and unity.
