The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved the formation of a new LA County Office of Food Equity yesterday. This endorsement, as noted on Supervisor Janice Hahn's official site, builds upon the Food Equity Roundtable's groundwork introduced by Supervisors Hahn and Kuehl in 2021. The new office aims to correct the ingrained disparities found in food insecurity that disproportionately affect the county's Black and Latino residents.

Even as the pandemic's harshest days appear to fade, hunger and food insecurity endure in the county. More than 1 million LA County households experience food insecurity annually according to an official statement. Areas such as Antelope Valley, East Los Angeles, Southeast Los Angeles County, and South Los Angeles lack accessible grocery stores and food assistance programs. Working to modernize the region's food system, the Office of Food Equity aims to target structural barriers that inhibit access to nutritious food for vulnerable communities.

The Food Equity Roundtable, the forerunner to the Office of Food Equity, set a basis for combating food insecurity. It engaged a diverse set of sectors, including public, private, nonprofit, and philanthropic partners. The Annenberg Foundation, the California Community Foundation, and the Weingart Foundation provided crucial resources, helping to create a strategic plan aimed at transforming the regional food system, improving nutrition education, and encouraging a more unified approach to hunger mitigation.

The Office of Food Equity will now take on the responsibility of implementing this strategic plan. Its blueprint includes updating zoning policies to promote urban farming, supporting local food entrepreneurs, preventing food waste, and boosting access to nutrition assistance programs. The Office expects to cooperate with philanthropic and non-profit organizations that are working outside the county government to eliminate hunger in LA County in a larger collective effort. This initiative's adoption expresses the LA County Board of Supervisors' dedication to tackling the escalating crisis of food insecurity.
