Earlier today, the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District decided to close four schools due to decreasing enrollment, a trend affecting several Los Angeles-area districts. The decision, which was passed by a 3-2 vote, ignited protests by students and parents who are deeply concerned about the potential negative effects on their education as noted by KTLA.
Those schools earmarked for closure are Bixby Elementary School, Sunset Elementary School, Los Robles Academy, and Del Valle Elementary School. The district's reconfiguration plan has been motivated by slipping birth rates that have led to decreased enrollment. The protesters, however, argue that the closures will lead to problems with transportation and put students' safety at risk as reported by KTLA.
Kimberly Sandoval, a handicapped student at Sunset Elementary, eloquently expressed the concerns of many. She emphasized the importance of the special facilities at her school for disabled students, saying, "Sunset is the only school that has swings for disabled people, and it has a playground for disabled people. It's the only playground I've ever seen with ramps" as conveyed by ABC7.
Stephanie Serrano, a member of the school board, is one of those opposed to the closures. She pointed out that the district is not in a state of financial distress that would legally necessitate these closures and maintained that the decision-making process should be slowed down to properly assess the community's comprehension of the issues at hand according to ABC7.
Hacienda La Puente's district Superintendent, Alfonso Jimenez, however, has promised to ensure minimal disruption and maintain quality instruction and extracurricular programs during the closures. Nevertheless, the impassioned reaction from the community at the school board meeting indicates that reaching a satisfactory resolution will undoubtedly require more dialogue and understanding around the varied perspectives involved as ABC7 reported.
