Today, a large fire erupted at a 200' x 200' pallet yard in Downtown Los Angeles. The flames rapidly spread to another pallet yard and threatened nearby commercial buildings. Responding to this incident, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) worked strenuously to control the growing fire. Concise updates regarding the incident were provided by the LAFD.
The LAFD alert noted the firefighters' struggle to stem the fire's progress due to the extensive number of pallets, leading to a significant fire load. The fire extended beneath the 10 Freeway, necessitating its closure in both directions. The LAFD coordinated with LADWP to increase the water pressure to combat the blaze while CalTrans assessed possible damages to the freeway.
In the early morning hours, the LAFD reported that despite both pallet yards fully engulfed in flames, the firefighters succeeded to shield exposed commercial buildings. While the fire had reached the underside of the 10 Freeway, CalTrans arrived at the scene to assess structural integrity. In addition, a downed high-tension wire cross arm on 14th Street, energized lines to be addressed by LADWP for safety. LAFD Heavy Equipment operators were dispatched in order to clear debris and provide firefighters access to areas with lingering fire.
According to a 02:33 AM update from the LAFD, most the fire load in the pallet yards had been consumed. Despite no official knockdown declared yet, the firefighting efforts were predicted to continue throughout the morning. The fire caused a complete closure of the 10 Freeway, rerouting traffic at Alameda and Santa Fe. On-site, LAFD PIO Firefighter David Ortiz provided updates to the media on the ensuing situation affecting Downtown Los Angeles residents.
The cause of the pallet fire remains being investigated by the LAFD, though their prompt response undoubtedly prevented further damage. With the incident affecting local routes, residents are reminded to exercise caution while on the road. It's important for them to stay informed about updates and be ready to adapt to evolving circumstances.
