Caltrans announced today that Mill Valley's Manzanita Park and Ride lot would undergo intermittent closures due to forecasted high tides. The lot, located adjacent to State Route 1 (SR-1), is set to be closed from November 20 to 29 and again from December 11 to 28 according to the official Caltrans tweet. The closures will primarily affect travelers who use the parking lot overnight and are implemented as a safety measure.
Caltrans maintenance will close the lower half of the Manzanita Park and Ride lot, along with the shoulder parking on State Route 1 (SR-1), in the city of Mill Valley from Monday, Nov. 20 through Wednesday, Nov. 29 as well as Monday, Dec. 11 through Thursday, Dec. 28. @maringov pic.twitter.com/ry5iqCEY1H

Although the closures may disrupt the plans of holiday travelers, they further highlight the increasingly common issue of high tides and their effects on urban construction.
To alert residents to the looming closures, Caltrans plans to set up Changeable Message Signs (CMS) strategically around the parking lot. In anticipation of possible traffic disruptions, road users are advised to visit the Caltrans QuickMap website for up-to-date information.
Officers and city planners aim to develop strategies that respond to the threat of flooding and high tides. While some coastal cities have been successful in creating innovative solutions that mitigate rising tides' impact, others still face significant challenges in implementing preventative measures, as illustrated by the upcoming Manzanita Park and Ride lot closure.
