Forensic genealogical research has led to the identification of a "John Doe" homicide victim, Lonnie Raymond Thomas, who had remained unidentified since 1980. Thomas was a 20-year-old black male found in North Orange County, killed by a gunshot to the face. His identification underscores the increasing importance of genetic genealogy in investigative work.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department reported that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) approached them about conducting a forensic genetic genealogy investigation in December 2021. The private forensic biotechnology company Othram contributed by creating a DNA profile from Thomas's skeletal remains by June 2022, helping drive the case forward.
The DNA specifics were then submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Genealogy Team. The FBI's provided leads then allowed OC Sheriff investigators to find and speak with a woman in Compton who they believed to be Thomas's mother. Investigators confirmed Thomas's identity through familial DNA samples in May 2023, and Thomas's family has been notified. Thomas's reinterment is scheduled to occur this week with a proper gravestone as announced by the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Orange County Sheriff's Department investigators will now center their efforts on the unresolved homicide. They encourage any person with information relating to this case to contact Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS or visit the Crime Stoppers' website.
