An Orange County pursuit ended in a devastating crash and suicide on Thursday. Officers attempted to stop a brown pickup truck around 4:25 p.m. near Harbor Boulevard and Westminster Avenue. Recognizing the driver was armed, officers discontinued the chase to maintain public safety. However, a police helicopter continued to track the suspect, which resulted in a collision as per KTLA news.
Upon entering an intersection near Victoria Street and Placentia Avenue, the suspect crashed into another vehicle. It is not yet known whether the other vehicle was populated or if anyone, aside from the suspect, was injured. As reported by CBS Los Angeles, immediately following the crash, the driver committed suicide.
Despite experiencing impact from the crash, the truck continued forward. The truck's rear tires, after losing traction due to a collision, caused friction that led to a vehicle fire, ultimately coating the vehicle in flames. On the scene, officers heard gunshots and identified a devastating revelation: the driver had ended his own life inside, and a firearm was found in the vehicle.
Authorities have called forth anyone with information relevant to the case as the investigation continues. As noted in the KTLA news piece, people may contact Det. Estlow at 714-741-5830 to aid in the ongoing investigation.
