Rohnert Park residents are on high alert after a mountain lion was spotted taking a morning stroll in their neighborhood. According to a bulletin from the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety, the big cat was seen weaving its way through the Five Creek Trail by an eagle-eyed local at 6:25 a.m. The predator was last noted heading east toward Snyder Lane and the mountain's solitude, leaving behind a trail of concern.
The Rohnert Park DPS advised residents to start using caution when hitting the trails or playing in their backyards.
CBS San Francisco reported that wildlife experts have chimed in with survival tips: if you happen to lock eyes with a mountain lion, stay calm and stand tall. Shouting and throwing whatever you've got on hand might convince Mr. or Mrs. Lion that you're more trouble than a tasty snack.
Keeping kids and pets secure is a category-one priority, especially during the dusk and dawn patrols that these felines favor. Retreat slowly if you've got to escape. Turning your back and sprinting away is likely to turn you into a meal. Back away, and those cougars should ideally maintain their social distance.
