The recent expansion of Central Park in Santa Clarita offers improved recreational facilities along with a focus on integrating art and culture into public spaces.
The expansion includes 15 acres of additional amenities such as multipurpose fields, an extra basketball court, and enhancements to the existing dog park. The park now features a 172-step exercise staircase that offers both physical exercise and a viewpoint of Santa Clarita's parkland, as highlighted in a press release by the city.
In addition to the recreational enhancements, park planners prioritized art and environmental consciousness. As the press release explained, two permanent art installations are being considered. These installations, themed around water, recognize the city's partnership with SCV Water, which leases the Central Park land.
The first proposed is artist Sujin Lim's "When a Cloud Meets a Cloud," including three white cloud sculptures to be placed in the park's center, promoting both aesthetic appreciation and water conservation awareness.
The City Council is currently considering the second proposal, a "River of Lights." The installation is envisioned as hundreds of LED lights embedded in a path leading up the 172-step staircase, which can be programmed to create visual patterns like a flowing river of lights.
New practical and innovative amenities have also been added, which include 268 additional parking stalls equipped with ADA and EV charging capabilities.
