On Wednesday, the Santa Monica Police Department arrested Charles Marcell Newman following a tip from off-duty law enforcement officers working as private security. The City of Santa Monica's official press report states that Newman, currently homeless, is a non-compliant sex registrant with a history of similar offenses in Santa Monica dating back to 2012.
After the tip, SMPD officers arrived on the premises to find security personnel detaining Newman in the house's driveway. Previous incidents in September and October at this same address were reportedly the work of Newman. His attempts to enter the house and cars by testing doors and windows got him captured on surveillance footage, leading to his identification and a warrant for his arrest.
The SMPD, as a result, has issued a request to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office to implement charges against Newman, including a completed burglary, multiple attempted burglaries, and a breach of his sex offender registration conditions. For the parole violation charges, Newman is being held without bail and is due to appear in court on Monday, November 13.
Any information about Newman or this specific incident should be reported to the Santa Monica Police Department.
