On Tuesday, a serene Santa Monica evening was disrupted when Adrian Jose Dugas, a 24-year-old homeless man from Los Angeles, was arrested for allegedly carjacking and kidnapping six individuals. The victims reportedly restrained Dugas until the arrival of officers as detailed by the Santa Monica Police Department's statement on Facebook.
Dugas is currently facing several charges brought against him by the LA County District Attorney as the Santa Monica Police Department detailed. These include six counts of robbery, six counts of kidnapping during the commission of a carjacking, one attempted carjacking, and one count of aggravated assault. Dugas's bail is set at $6.4 million, and he is scheduled to appear in court on the 29th.
The Santa Monica Police Department has indicated they are investigating a possible second carjacking incident involving Dugas and are appealing to the public for information. The SMPD's statement encourages us to deliberate on our approach to tackling homelessness, crime, and rehabilitation and the adequacy of essential services for those in need.
