Sonoma County is slated to hold its second job and resource fair for the homeless on November 16, building upon the success of the first fair conducted in 2023. The Santa Rosa fair reached over 350 individuals, with many transitioning into work or job training programs, as reported by the county. These events aim to provide targeted resources to the homeless community.
These job and resource fairs are integral to combating homelessness in Sonoma County. Current county data reveals a 22% decrease in homelessness from 2,893 individuals in 2022 down to 2,266 people this year, according to their records. However, work remains to be done as thousands are still in need of assistance.
Sonoma County, Job Link, and organizations like Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Santa Rosa, Goodwill Redwood Empire, and HomeFirst Sonoma County, come together to connect homeless individuals with possible employers at these fairs. They also offer wraparound services, encompassing food, medical, and mental health support, alongside housing assistance, as described in the county announcement.
These fairs serve as platforms, helping individuals find their potential and live with dignity, as noted by Katie Greaves, director of the Employment and Training Division in the Human Services Department. Collaborative efforts from community organizations aid those at risk of homelessness in achieving stability and surmounting obstacles.
