Flames viciously engulfed a metal recycling firm on Terminal Island yesterday, causing Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters to launch a colossal defensive battle against the blaze. The fire, which erupted inside a 50' x 75' metal-clad industrial building at 901 E New Dock St in San Pedro, escalated quickly forcing crews to fight the inferno from land, despite the proximity of nearby waters, as reported by the LAFD.
As the fire intensified, the scale of the disaster became apparent; the building's dimensions seemed to suddenly stretch out to 100' x 100' with an open roof, creating a fiery cauldron of metal and debris. "Though 68 LAFD Firefighters are now assigned by land and sea, the defensive fight against heavy flames - at what is now described as a 100' x 100' open roofed metal-clad industrial building, is being handled by land based firefighters," as stated by the LAFD in an update. All told, it took 68 valiant firefighters to quickly get ahead of the fire and beat back the flames that were voraciously consuming the metal and other recycling debris at the scene.
The Los Angeles firefighters, demonstrating skill and determination, subdued the blaze in a swift 46 minutes, reporting a successful "knockdown". The monumental industrial building, part of the "SA Recycling Terminal Island," found itself saved by the effort of the responders, whose rapid action averted a potential disaster in the heart of the Port of Los Angeles — a hub bustling with commerce and daily toil. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, nor were any evacuations necessary in this instance of potential peril made benign by the hands of the city's guardians.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, with investigative operations set to unfold, as disclosed by the LAFD. "The burning materials appear to be metal scrap and other debris, apparently related to automobile recycling," as noted by Brian Humphrey of the LAFD.
