Details emerge regarding the tragic car accident from last year involving a sheriff's recruit killed and 24 injured. With legal action underway against the driver, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office reported this news via GovDelivery, following the statement from Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn.
The incident took place during the morning run of recruit class #464, where they were hit by a driver traveling the wrong way, leading to the death of recruit Alejandro Martinez and injuries to 24 others. Hahn mentioned that the repercussions of this event linger both at the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and with the families of the victims.
The driver, Nicholas Gutierrez, 23, of Diamond Bar has been charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and reckless driving causing great bodily injury, as per NBC News.
After his arrest on November 16, 2022, Gutierrez was later released pending an investigation. As per the claims, the legal consequences could include a sentence of up to 12 years in state prison. "The felony filings today are a step toward justice for the family of Deputy Alejandro Martinez and all the LASD Recruits who were injured, many of whom have life-altering injuries," asserted Sheriff Robert Luna, as per NBC news.
