On Tuesday, the trial for Nestor Hernandez, accused of murdering two healthcare workers at Methodist Dallas Medical Center in 2022, began. Hernandez is charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of social worker Jacqueline Pokuaa and nurse Katie Annette Flowers, as well as a separate charge of aggravated assault against a peace officer, reports Fox 4 News.
WFAA confirms the incident occurred on October 22, 2022, at the Oak Cliff neighborhood's Methodist Hospital, during Hernandez’s visit to his newborn child and former girlfriend. The situation escalated after Hernandez allegedly used a handgun to assault his girlfriend, triggering the subsequent tragedies.
Reportedly, Hernandez shot Pokuaa once fatally as she entered the room for routine care. Hernandez continued firing when Sgt. Robert Rangel and Flowers arrived, shooting and enriching Flowers. Hernandez began to reload his weapon, a move which Rangel seized to shoot and injure him. Hernandez eventually retreated to his girlfriend's hospital room, where he gave himself up to law enforcement after a 10-minute standoff per WFAA. Miraculously, throughout the incident, the newborn remained unscathed.
Over a year after the incident, Hernandez's trial process started, first with jury selection on November 6, 2023, followed by the commencement of testimonies on November 7th. Hernandez currently resides in Dallas County jail, with bail totaling over $2 million, according to The Chronicle.
The ongoing court proceedings aim to carefully examine the facts and circumstances of the case, acknowledge the devastating effects of the incident on the victims, their families, and the community, and ensure all parties seeking justice are heard.
