A USC student alleges she was sexually assaulted by a Lyft driver near the University Park campus in the early hours of November 1. Authorities are working to investigate these claims, as reported by the Daily News.
The victim, who had taken a Lyft to return home from a West Hollywood club, alleges the assault occurred near her South Grand Avenue apartment. The suspect is described as a thin man, between the age of 25 and 35, with a black beard and hair, driving a black sedan. However, Lyft has stated they are unable thus far to match a report or ride with the details provided, but are fully cooperating with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation, as per CBS News reports.
Addressing the unsettling news, USC has issued a warning for students, emphasizing precaution when using rideshare services. No detailed descriptions about the driver and vehicle are available yet, but the university underscores the importance of vigilance of its students, according to NBC Los Angeles. Students at USC have shown solidarity with the alleged victim, rallying in a show of support.
Upon learning of the details of this case, authorities are appealing urgently to any witnesses or individuals with information to contact either the USC Department of Public Safety at (213) 740-6000 or the LAPD at (213) 485-6571.
In the wake of this disturbing incident, the community is seeking a recommitment from ridesharing services to prioritize and ensure rider safety.
