A routine traffic stop in Athens, Georgia, led to an unexpected discovery when officers stumbled upon a cache of stolen goods in a suspect's vehicle—a hoard from popular retail stores—that has since sparked a wider investigation into a potential theft ring, law enforcement officials said.
As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, during the stop, 55-year-old Athens resident Leta Davis provided a false name but was soon uncovered to have other outstanding warrants for shoplifting. The search of her vehicle yielded multiple trash bags brimming with merchandise from Victoria’s Secret and Bath and Body Works.
The merchandise, valued at several thousand dollars, has led to Davis facing multiple charges, including Theft by Shoplifting and Theft by Receiving Stolen Property. Inquiries by authorities into Davis's possible connection to other thefts in the metro Atlanta area are ongoing, as efforts are now coordinated with local agencies to track down additional leads.
Police were initially summoned to a shoplifting call on December 4 at Victoria's Secret on Scenic Highway in Snellville, where they discovered that Davis had fled before they arrived. An officer returned to the store two days later, in a bid to gather more information, at which point Davis was spotted revisiting the store, and then later Bath and Body Works. She was observed going into the store with an empty tote bag and then returning with it full of items, according to WSB-TV.
Following her arrest, it was discovered that Davis had already been under the radar with outstanding warrants from Barrow, Cherokee, and Cobb counties for other shoplifting charges and was currently on probation. She was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail and is now charged with theft by shoplifting, theft by receiving stolen property, giving a false name, and misdemeanor obstruction. The Gwinnett Police Department is working in conjunction with other agencies to determine whether Davis might be implicated in more criminal activities.
