The final evening of the Austin Trail of Lights, a festive mainstay expected to wrap up its annual run on Saturday, was snuffed out by an unrelenting rain. The popular holiday event, which lights up Zilker Park with a dazzling array of luminous displays, had to cancel its last hurrah as the storms rendered the grounds unsuitable for the throngs of holiday revelers.
According to a notice posted by CBS Austin, organizers pulled the plug on the event close to 5:30 p.m., citing the recent rainstorm that doused the park. The announcement came as a disappointment to many who had plans to attend what has become a seasonal tradition for countless locals and visitors alike.
Refunds are on the way for those who had their evening plans washed away. Eventgoers who purchased tickets in advance are advised to keep a vigilant eye on their email inboxes for instructions on how to obtain a refund. KVUE reports that refunds for parking passes will be processed by Ticketbud, with the original method of payment being credited within five to seven business days.
The Trail of Lights braved inclement weather earlier this season as well, with Thursday and Friday seeing the closure of the Polo Field parking area near the iconic Zilker Tree, though the event itself went on. Organizers previously urged attendees to monitor emails and check social media pages for any weather-related updates, in what became a preemptive hint of the eventual cancellation.
