AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin-Travis County Sobering Center is slated to soon double its capacity after Travis County commissioners green-lit funding for major renovations. KNOWN for introducing innovative solutions to communal healthcare challenges, the center has been a staple in the community since its inauguration back in 2018. Over 10,000 individuals have utilized its services to date, marking a significant impact on the city’s approach towards health and rehabilitation.
The planned renovation isn’t solely about increasing numbers; it's also aimed to more efficiently organize the space. The upgrade will enable the facility to better separate areas for individuals who are in the process of sobering up from those who have sobered and are awaiting transfer to further treatment. This initiative is expected to greatly enhance operational efficiency and patient care, as reported by KVUE.
"This is such an exciting way to wrap up our first 5 years of service to the community. These two partners demonstrate years of effort from our staff delivering high-quality services, and our leadership building effective relationships with stakeholders," Jana Ortega from the center's Board of Directors. "There is so much work to be done to make treatment and healthcare the solutions over-incarceration, and these investments help us to do just that," according to KXAN.
The center, located at 1213 Sabine St., continues to operate around the clock, offering a vital resource for Austin’s intoxicated individuals to safely recover without the threat of immediate legal action, as per KVUE.
