A tragic cloud hangs over the Isom family this holiday season, as a house fire in Barstow, California, led to the deaths of two young siblings. Earlier this month on December 14, flames engulfed their home after their Christmas tree ignited, according to FOX LA. In a gut-wrenching ordeal just before 6:50 p.m., local firefighters received calls about children trapped within the inferno.
The fire, which broke out in the 2500 block of St. Lawrence Street, saw firefighters diving through windows in a desperate attempt to rescue the trapped Isom children. Despite their efforts, 2-year-old Aalijah Isom perished at the scene, and her 7-year-old sister Annie later died after a week-long battle at the UC Irvine burn facility, KTLA reported. The family's GoFundMe page, established to cover funeral costs and assist in relocation, shares that Aalijah was "the heart of the family" and Annie a "vivacious spirit."
In an interview gathered by FOX LA, the children's mother Charmon Isom recounted the harrowing events: "You run and you try to do as much as you can, bust windows, run in, try and get in try and get under the fire. I have (first-degree) burns on my feet from trying to get in there." Charmon returned to their home for the first time since the fire, which visibly left her shaken. The community showed support through a vigil held on Saturday where family and friends shared their sorrow and memories.
The family's patriarch, Akeem Isom, expressed his grief, "There's no amount of money, there's no amount of valuables that can bring back my children. There's nothing that can bring back the happy times that I spent with my child, both of them." As per KTLA, Annie's organs were donated, giving a chance at life to others even as the Isom family confronts this devastating loss. The details for the donation drive and information about the family's fundraiser are available online for those who wish to extend support.
