Good news for the commuters and nature aficionados of San Bernardino County, as Birch Creek Bridge in Oak Glen is finally back in action, completed weeks before Santa's big day. The bridge, pummeled by Tropical Storm Hilary's ruthless mudflows this August, received an expedited makeover, according to the San Bernardino County Public Works.
It all goes back to the El Dorado fire of September 2020, scorching the lands of Oak Glen, Yucaipa, and Forest Falls—a tragic prelude that left behind an assemblage of wounds in the earth's flesh. These wounds, raw and exposed, welcomed a torrent of mud and boulders come mid-August, tearing through the prior 12x6-foot bridge, as if to say that what we build can just as easily be unmade by nature's indifferent hand. As per San Bernardino County, "The Public Works engineering team put together a quick project to replace the destroyed 12×6-foot box culvert bridge crossing with two larger 10×10-foot pre-cast boxes."
In a swift, two-month execution, starting in September, diligent hands and minds collaborated to reopen the gateway before Thanksgiving.
Public Works is channeling efforts into clearing and fortifying these vulnerable areas. K-rails, storm cameras, and the like are not just equipment but sentinels positioned in the ongoing battle against the elements. As shared by county representatives, they've "prepositioned barricades and heavy equipment to quickly close roads and begin clean-up work as soon as a storm has ended."
