The crisis at the Texas border continues to intensify as US officials are inundated with thousands of migrants, including a group of 600 encountered by Border Patrol agents, featuring one little girl dressed up like Santa Claus. This year-end surge has seen more than 10,000 individuals processed in just the last few days in Eagle Pass, Texas, according to the New York Post.
On a single day, Border Patrol officials had to quickly adapt, encountering over 12,600 illegal immigrants, a record for one day. This comes as asylum seekers are rushing to beat a new Texas state law that may soon to criminalize such unauthorized entries. Migrants meticulously organized their crossing in the pre-dawn darkness, with some wading across the Rio Grande, illuminated only by cell phones held aloft.
The Houston Chronicle details the broader implications of this flurry of border activity, noting that Customs and Border Patrol intercepted a staggering 2.4 million people along the Southwest border in fiscal year 2023, contributing greatly to the humanitarian and law enforcement crisis unfolding.
Officials witnessed migrants utilize blankets and coats to cover the concertina wire, effectively creating a path into the US. Once over, they were promptly escorted to a processing area. A striking image from the scene captured one child in a Santa hat and dress, marking the incongruity of their hopeful entrance into the US against the backdrop of a stark humanitarian crisis. November alone saw authorities encounter 242,418 illegal immigrants, a new record for the month.
With a total approaching a record-breaking 2.5 million apprehensions of individuals illegally crossing the border in this fiscal year, and an estimated 670,000 "gotaways" evading authorities, the situation has reached a critical point. The Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel didn't mince words when she blasted the Biden administration's handling of the crisis, stating, "The numbers don't lie," adding, "Joe Biden created a humanitarian crisis at our border and is actively weakening our national security," as reported by the New York Post.
