Last night, the tranquility of a Cotati Walgreens was pierced by the urgent sirens of responding police units after a shoplifter went on a thieving spree. According to the Cotati Police Department, the drama unfolded at approximately 5 PM when a male suspect was caught stuffing various items into a duffle bag. The authorities were alerted as the thief escaped on foot along Gravenstein Way toward Wilford Lane.
The suspect's flight was short-lived. Cotati Police, demonstrating swift action that has become known in the community, canvassed the area and pinpointed a man whose description was broadcasted moments earlier. In a statement obtained by the Cotati Police Department's Facebook page, they recounted that the suspect was "quickly detained without incident" and found possessing the notorious duffle bag. There was, however, a twist in the saga as the man initially tried to deceive officers with a fictitious identity.
Their investigation peeled back the layers of falsehood, revealing his true identity and an active felony warrant eagerly waiting for him. The Cotati PD's post detailed the charges that were ultimately pinned on the shoplifter: shoplifting, possessing stolen property, possession of burglary tools, possession of narcotics, providing false identity to a police officer, and the outstanding felony warrant. A relentless arm of the law escorted him to Sonoma County Jail, where he remains, held without bail.
The police recovered and returned merchandise to nearly $900.00, a small victory for retailers who often bear the brunt of such brazen acts.
