Culver City has ushered in a new era with the unanimous City Council election of Yasmine-Imani McMorrin, the first woman of color to occupy the mayoral seat. McMorrin, who has been a City Council member since 2020 and served as Vice Mayor this past year, broke new ground on Monday, December 11th, 2023, as she claimed a pioneering victory in the city's 106-year history, according to a government bulletin.
Reflecting on the historical significance of her appointment, Mayor McMorrin expressed gratitude and a sense of duty, stating, "I’m grateful for this opportunity to continue to serve Culver City in this capacity as its newest, historic Mayor. As only the sixth woman—and first black woman—councilmember, this moment is not lost on me, and I thank my colleagues for their vote of confidence to lead us through the next year with them and Vice-Mayor O’Brien." McMorrin outlined her focus on steady, forward-thinking policies that cater to community advancement and protections for the most vulnerable, as reported in a statement.
Prior to her notable rise in local politics, McMorrin was Vice Chair of the Culver City General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) and has been known for her hands-on approach to tackling civic issues. Her term as mayor will span a customary 12-month period, following the City Charter, which requires an annual election among City Council members to designate a mayor. McMorrin is set to chair the upcoming City Council meeting on January 8, 2024.
