Sr. Sgt. "What this is about today is getting out and talking to unsheltered people about not being in the intersections and being careful," Sr. Sgt. Dyer said, the team's initiative took them to 12 different locations where fatalities have occurred this year, including the site at I-30 and Cockrell Hill Road where a drunk driver struck and killed Terry Ivory on December 16; the deputies distributed cookies on Christmas Eve, aiming to provide not just sustenance, but also essential safety advice to the homeless, per FOX 4 News.
The tragic backdrop to this outreach was the recent incident involving Nestor Joel Lujan Flores, who, according to police, fatally struck Ivory while driving under the influence before continuing with the victim's body in the vehicle for 40 miles to White Settlement. Flores's alleged actions have brought the conversation about road safety, particularly for vulnerable pedestrians, to the forefront of community issues.
The sheriff's department confirmed a sobering statistic that there have been 58 fatalities including 13 pedestrian deaths in the areas this year, the initiative also placed a strong emphasis on nighttime visibility, urging those on foot to wear reflective clothing and be especially vigilant in poor lighting conditions, best practices also include keeping out of traffic lanes and ensuring that any disabled vehicles are moved off the road to avoid further accidents, revealing in a statement obtained by FunAsia.
