The City of Dallas is set to shift the gears of its bureaucratic machine, leaving behind a bygone era of paper trails. Dallas's Development Services Department (DSD) will begin to fully process commercial permits electronically starting March 1, 2024. The initiative aims to streamline workflows, boost efficiency, and lend a hand to environmental conservation efforts, according to the City of Dallas.
By introducing a paperless permit system, the city expresses a commitment to both innovation and improved customer service. "The transition to paperless permitting aligns with our Service First culture," said Andrew Espinoza, director of DSD, highlighting the move as a step to "serving the Development community as efficiently as possible." The new process allows applicants to quickly submit any commercial permit applications online, get real-time updates on statuses, and easily access permit-related documents through the City's secure online platform, per the City of Dallas.
To facilitate this change, the department is offering Building Dallas Together training sessions at the DSD Training Center. These sessions are designed to assist developers and contractors in familiarizing themselves effectively with the new paperless process.
Echoing the change, Espinoza urges all members of the development community to proactively adapt to this "progressive change." The electronic system includes features like automated notifications that will seem to effortlessly keep applicants informed. Gone will be the traditional paper reviews as DSD is set to conduct plan reviews digitally, fostering not only quicker turnaround times but also reducing the environmental footprint—an aspect that the city proudly acknowledges, as per the City of Dallas.
