After decades of dead ends and silence, a "brutal" cold case in Montgomery County, Texas, has finally turned a corner, as investigators have identified the victim of a 37-year-old homicide, officials said Monday. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office made the revelation after groundbreaking work in DNA technology enabled a fresh look into the unsolved case of a body found at Crater Lake in 1986, as reported by FOX 26 Houston.

The breakthrough came with the assistance of advanced forensic techniques utilized by Othram Lab in The Woodlands, Texas, which led to the successful extraction of DNA for genealogy assessment from remains exhumed in May 2023. Clarence Lynn Wilson, a 34-year-old man from Texas City who vanished in 1985, was identified as the victim, KBTX detailed. A family member in California provided a DNA sample, which confirmed the identity of the remains as Wilson's in October.

"This new technology is a game changer," Montgomery County detective Fadi Rizk told FOX 26 Houston. He expressed hope that with these advances, more unidentified victims could be named and families like Wilson's could receive the closure they desperately need. The case, which featured a disturbing execution-style murder with Wilson's body found shot through the skull and weighed down by cement blocks, has left a harrowing mark on his family.

Wilson's sister, Gwen Tranum, spoke about the torment of grappling with her brother's violent death. "I think the brutality of the whole thing, I think that was the hardest part," Tranum told FOX 26 Houston. She urged anyone with information to come forward, saying, "If you know something, just come forward and tell you what you know, and maybe they can find someone, and we can have closure."

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate Wilson's homicide and encourages anyone with information about the victim or the crime to contact their Cold Case Squad at 936-760-5820 or Multi-County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-392-STOP [7867]. Detective Rizk also directly appeals: "If anybody has any information on who Clarence Wilson was, if they knew him personally or know about the homicide, please reach out to me," he says according to FOX 26 Houston.
