Denton County Public Health (DCPH) is seizing National Influenza Vaccination Week to remind locals the fight against the flu hasn't passed its prime time—vaccinations are still available and just as crucial to take now.
Despite the holiday cheer, flu season remains a formidable foe, with peak activity traditionally striking between December and February. According to Dr. Matt Richardson, Director of Public Health, Denton County is witnessing a rise in flu cases. "We’ve seen a local increase in flu activity, and we want to remind everyone that getting your annual flu shot is the best way to protect ourselves as we enter this holiday season," he said, as per Denton County, Texas.
The approach to staving off this unforgiving illness is threefold: vaccination, prevention, and treatment. DCPH emphasizes the importance of the flu shot for everyone aged 6 months and up as the first line of defense. As a close second, everyday actions like masking up, frequent hand-washing, and staying home when sick can go a long way in halting the spread of not just the flu but other airborne menaces, including RSV and COVID-19. Finally, for those already battling sniffles and sneezes, antiviral medications can be lifesavers, possibly speeding up recovery and preventing hospitalization from flu complications.
