Arlington’s bravest have a new home base. The ribbon-cutting for Fire Station No. 1 in Downtown Arlington brought out city bigwigs and community members on Friday. The station is now located at 401 W. Main St. is a modern upgrade from the previous one, which had been patched up since its initial opening in 1954. Among those in attendance were Arlington Mayor Jim Ross and Fire Chief Bret Stidham, who both highlighted the significance of the new facility for the community's safety and the well-being of the first responders, according to the City of Arlington, Texas.

"This new fire station is not just a building, but a testament to the values and priorities of our community," Chief Stidham commented, expressing his pride in the department and the tireless dedication that led to this day. The groundbreaking for this impressive 17,667-square-foot, two-story building was in March last year, and it was a part of the 2014 Bond Program approved by voters, per the City of Arlington, Texas.

The highlight of the ceremony included traditions like the pushing of Engine 1 out of its bay, combined with the ringing of the fire department bell, and raising the station's flag. These rituals marked the station's readiness to serve. Features of the new station include five apparatus bays big enough for a larger fleet, improved living quarters for the crews, and dedicated areas for community engagement and historical exhibits.

Mayor Ross noted the importance of investing in first responders, saying, "Taking care of the first responders in Arlington is critical to our moving forward as a city." He underscored their role in keeping the neighborhoods safe and protecting them from fires and crime. "But also making sure the businesses and residents know that they are safe in this community," Ross added, as outlined by the City of Arlington, Texas.

In addition to these functional advancements, the station boasts environmentally friendly traits such as energy-saving windows and a high-efficiency mechanical system. The station’s architecture also drew praise from Maggie Campbell, Downtown Arlington Management Corporation President and CEO, who thanked city leaders for the investment. “We can continue to grow and develop our Downtown and bring more residents and businesses here, knowing that we have the fire department and the police department not far away,” Campbell told the crowd, per the City of Arlington, Texas.
