Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn has appointed Eddie Martinez, a prominent community figure, to the County's first-ever LGBTQ+ Commission. Martinez, known for his enduring community activism, joins the 15-member panel set up to give a voice to the county's LGBTQ+ community on pressing issues.

Martinez, who identifies as Latino and LGBTQ+, brings extensive experience to the table, including a notable stint as the executive director of the Latino Equality Alliance, which he helped to co-found. His appointment was designed to ensure that LGBTQ+ individuals from Southeast LA are well-represented—a commitment Hahn made clear when creating the Commission. Hahn was quoted in a GovDelivery bulletin, "Eddie is a well-known and respected voice in these communities," highlighting his community service and outreach efforts.

Martinez's background is highlighted by more than two decades in non-profit management, with 18 years dedicated to The Wall Las Memorias Project, an organization focused on HIV/AIDS. He has taken to profoundly make an impact through civic engagement. As recognized by Hahn, Martinez has been integral in advocating for LGBTQ+ youth spaces and taking part in local community improvement initiatives.

In response to his appointment, Martinez shared his enthusiasm and outlined the Commission's potential impact. "It is an honor to serve on the Commission to represent Supervisor Janice Hahn and the LGBTQ community of District 4," he said, evidently ready to help shape the policies that will bolster the safety and well-being of LGBTQ+ residents.

The urgency of the Commission's work is underscored by stark statistics. According to the LA County Commission on Human Relations’ 2021 Hate Crime Report, the rate of violence against gay men and transgender individuals far surpasses that against other marginalized groups. With a surge in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation nationwide, the Commission’s guidance on policy and budget priorities could be pivotal in countering these trends. Martinez, along with Ellie Perez, Interim Executive Director of The LGBTQ Center Long Beach and Hahn's other appointee, will no doubt have their work cut out for them in this vital new role for Los Angeles County.
